CPT/SCPT

CPT in-situ testing

Foundex collaborated with Geotech AB from Sweden in the 1980s to develop a patented wireless Acoustic CPT system that offers distinct advantages over conventional cable‑based systems. The most innovative feature of the acoustic system is the elimination of internal cables, which allows for mud injection through the rods. This mud is discharged above the transmitter via a ported cone rod, providing lubrication that significantly reduces rod friction while advancing into the formation. This enables penetration depths in a single push that are often unattainable with traditional cable‑based systems.

The cost savings are especially significant in offshore projects, where refusal due to rod friction can otherwise require costly drill‑outs. Foundex’s CPT system minimizes these limitations, supporting efficient deployment in both land‑based and offshore applications. Another key benefit is the ability to handle CPT rods in lengths of up to 9 meters, compared to the standard 1‑metre rods, which increases deployment speed and operational efficiency.

Since first working with Geotech AB to develop the CPT system in the 1980s, Foundex has upgraded and acquired recent generations of the CPT NOVA system, incorporating updated hardware and cones, an improved software package, and the ability to collect additional measurements such as resistivity and inclination, along with the standard data set including:

  • Point resistance
  • Skin friction
  • Pore pressure

Foundex has also developed an offshore suction anchor and casing system that provides up to 10 tonnes of reaction force and isolates the cone from vessel movement, supporting accurate and consistent data collection in marine environments.
