Project Description

In 2025, Foundex was engaged to complete an extensive offshore marine geotechnical site investigation program that included Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), coordination of third‑party Seismic Cone Penetration Testing (SCPT), Resistivity Cone Penetration Testing (RCPT), sonic drilling, mud rotary drilling, PS suspension logging, and specialized proprietary push sampling. The project was completed to support the design of a federal‑provincial infrastructure project along the coast of British Columbia. The program was executed over several months from two spud/anchor barges under continuous 24‑hour operations within an active marine shipping corridor, as well as nearshore operations with intertidal access, requiring strict coordination with vessel traffic and marine controls.

From the barge platforms, CPT soundings were advanced at designated test locations to collect continuous stratigraphic and geotechnical data for engineering analysis. Strict control of verticality and penetration rates was maintained to support data accuracy and repeatability under variable offshore conditions, including tidal influence, current loading, and vessel‑induced movement.

A total of 85 CPT locations (to depths of up to 110 meters), 7 mud‑rotary boreholes (to depths of up to 130 meters), 16 sonic sampling locations (to depths of up to 50 meters), 7 SCPT locations (to depths of up to 68 meters), 4 PS logging surveys (to depths of up to 130 meters), and 3 specialty sampling boreholes (to depths of up to 50 meters) were completed.

The program required high‑precision positioning, extensive soil testing procedures, and continuous quality control monitoring to maintain data integrity. Coordination between marine operations, drilling crews, and technical personnel was critical to maintaining productivity, safety compliance, and operational efficiency. Foundex successfully completed the program while meeting the technical, logistical, and safety requirements of a complex marine project.
